Kentucky Numeracy Counts Act
Kentucky's New Math Proficiency Law
(HB 162, 2024)
With the passage of HB 162, Kentucky has set a statewide goal to ensure all students achieve math proficiency by focusing on procedural skills, fluency, and real-world problem-solving. The law emphasizes comprehensive, standards-aligned instruction by highly trained teachers in reading and math, with a multi-tiered support system to help students reach grade-level performance by the end of grade five.
For middle and high schools, the law requires:
-
Teachers have the skills to help students develop critical math knowledge and strategies.
-
A multi-tiered system of support for engaging all students in applying mathematical content at a proficient level.
-
High-quality, challenging math instruction to ensure proficiency.
Kentucky is committed to providing the necessary resources and training for teachers to deliver effective math education and support every student’s success.
